Examinations are generally conducted to test the candidates’ knowledge and ability. They are determinant factors of pupils and students through academic institutions. Examinations could be internal or external; internal examinations are conducted by individual schools for their students while external exams are conducted by professional bodies which has been empowered to do so.
External examinations and certificates obtained are prerequisites for higher certificates. The certificates are also used for employment purposes, hence the importance attached to these examinations and for these reasons students put in much efforts to pass.
It is therefore necessary those involved with the responsibility of setting questions, conducting the examinations, marking the scripts and compilation of result should meticulously handle their responsibilities.
More often than not, there are instance of missing scripts after examinations and in some extreme instances no results for candidates that actually sat for the examinations. These cases are becoming worrisome as they are on the increase. Equally unfortunate are rampant cases of alternating the results of examination scores by examiners who are unmindful of the harmful effects of their mistakes are in a hurry to enter scores for candidates.
In the recently released state basic examinations results , a lot of anomalies were observed. The discrepancies in the results pasted online and the hard copies sent to schools is a case in point that poses a cause for major concern for parents and general public.
Some candidates were even marked absent in the result sheets for a subject they actually sat for. Examination results should not be learning tools for posting information online. Examiners should master the use of information and communication technology and the use of their gadgets adequately before posting such all-important information like examination results online.
This is necessary in order to achieve sustained authenticity and trust for certificates obtained from such examinations.
